Sometimes your baby is simply in need of comfort. After all, we as adults often feel that way. How much more so would a new little baby who is trying to adjust to his new life outside the womb need comfort? Why not try a rocking chair? Your mother and grandmother most likely used this method. The slow but steady rocking motion reminds your baby of your body motion while he was inside your womb. Did you ever notice how when you were pregnant your baby was most active when you were still or trying to sleep? This is because as you walked and moved throughout the day he was being rocked and most likely sleeping. Rocking your baby gently harnesses this same concept with the added benefit of him being able to feel and smell you as you do so. Never underestimate the soothing power of the human touch. You know how much you enjoy a good foot rub or back massage. Your baby will enjoy this as well. The human touch stimulates endorphins (the feel good hormone) throughout the body. Gently stroke your baby’s head. Do so lightly and in the same direction. This steady and consistent motion stimulates endorphins and gives your baby an overall sense of well being. Lightly pat him on his back or chest. Just remember, consistent motion is key. Changing direction or moving to often will stimulate instead of soothing your new baby. Wrap or swaddle your baby before hand to add to his feeling of security and once again, remember his environment in the womb. His movements were comfortably restricted making him feel secure. Swaddling mimics that same environment. Take care however, not to wrap him overly tight. He should be comfortably restricted in his movements. Newborn babies readily respond to soft noises. Coo softly at him to let him know that you are there. One of the never techniques you may want to try is “baby whispering.” No, this is not a movie. It is a very effective technique for calming baby. Hold your baby just below your lips and very quietly and consistently whisper “SHHHH.” Your voice should be heard just above his ear canal. It may take a few minutes of whispering to see results. Many babies eventually respond to the technique. Once again, we go back to the womb. It is thought that the constant sound emulates the swishing in churning sounds within the amniotic sac of the womb. No wonder babies respond so well. It is been said that music seems to soothe the savage beast, right? Then your little bundle of joy is sure to respond. Why not try a lullaby compilation of moon dreams lullaby music CD? This collection of lullabies features soothing sounds that will transport your baby into a world of soft calming music accompanied by unique and meaningful lyrics. It contains a nice medley of soft vocals and instrumentals sure to soothe you and your new baby. With so many techniques available, you are sure to find one or more that works for your baby. Remember, choosing those that create an environment similar to being inside the womb, combined with soft soothing sounds and the human touch are sure ways to make your baby feel right at home. |
