Determining what type of child care provider you will need includes looking at your budget, lifestyle, and family needs. This takes some research. You may want to ask some questions of your child care provider such as: May I drop in anytime? May I participate in the program planning? What are your hours of operations? What are the fees? What does this include? What happens if my child is injured or becomes ill at the center? Are you trained in child development? Enrolling a child in a day care center or family day care presents a whole set of potential adjustment problems. Not only is the child with a new care giver, he or she is in an entirely new environment. The more time he or she has to get used to the idea before going to day care for the first time, the smoother the transaction is likely to be. One of the best ways to put your child at ease prior to starting day care is to have him or her visit the facility or family day care home, preferably more then once, for short visits. Your child can interact with the primary care giver as well as the other children that will be in their room. When packing up for day care either the night before or the morning of the first day, you could having your child pick out a special item to bring. Be sure you check with the day care director first, to see if their are any items they will not allow. If your child is a toddler or even younger, you will want to make sure you pack a diaper bag with toys they are familiar with, and their favorite blanket. Also, don't forget to take lots of pictures for that special memory book! On the big day, when its time to leave your child with the caregiver and make your way to work, reassure him or her that you will return at a specific time, such as lunch time or after nap time. Try to get your child interested in an activity before you leave, then leave. They may show some distress at your leaving but it will become easier as each day comes and goes. The anxiety may continue for a week or so but it is important that you let them make this step of separation as early as possible. Even if your child is adjusting fantastically to the new care situation, your continued involvement in your childs day, whenever possible, will help to keep them happy and secure. |
