Do I take my new baby to church?

The moment has arrived. Your new little one is here in your arms. No more waited anticipation, no more labor; no more wondering when the big day will come. You are ready to get out and show the world your little bundle of love and joy. First, you want your family to see, hold, and love on your tiny baby. They can easily come to you. Next, you want your church family to meet and see your blessing! It’s a little hard to have the church come to you. Going to church with an infant is possible but should be heeded with some important tips to make it not only enjoyable but safe for baby and successful for mom as well.

It is a good idea to wait a few weeks before you take your new child to church. In fact, a rule of thumb is one month. I know, I know, it sounds like forever but it isn’t. Years ago my doctor cautioned me. An infant needs time to adjust to the world. Each day their immune system is growing stronger, their bodies are growing tougher, and they are adjusting to their new surroundings, their family and home. Do what is best for them. That means waiting. After your full term baby has reached a month old get ready to show him/her off and join your family for worship on a Sunday morning. Here are a few tips for making this a successful first time adventure.

Arrive a little bit late. It may sound crazy but this will allow you to enter right as worship begins. Most infants enjoy music and will often be content. Make sure you have your spouse or a friend help you if you have other children who need to be in classes etc. Sit near the back or an aisle seat. This way you can get in and out easily. If you are comfortable nursing bring a nursing blanket and go ahead. Some places of worship even have an area to do this as well. It is important to not pass baby around. You don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings but remember babies need to be kept from germs and often people with colds will miss work but not church. Keeping your baby in your arms or a car seat or snuggly make it easier to not have baby passed around. Enjoy your time with your new little one and your family as you model what life is all about!
