Back To Work!!

For many people going back to work after having a baby is not a choice, but a necessity. For moms, the shift back to work can present a wide range of emotional, physical and financial challenges, especially after providing full-time care to baby during maternity leave.

According to Rachel Ozretich, a certified family life educator, guilt, worry, frustration, jealousy and loss are common emotions that new moms often experience when leaving their child in the daily hands of another caregiver.

Feelings of jealousy and loss can arise when a mom misses her child's first steps or when a parent picks up the child from the provider but the child isn't ready to leave.

"It is difficult to find a child-care situation where the mother is entirely comfortable," Ozretich said.

The quality of the child care is critical to the emotional well-being of parents, she explained. It is also beneficial to employers to assist their employees in accessing quality child care. Being able to drop in at lunch and having a strong connection with the child-care provider is important. Jessica Thayer, who cares for infants, said a lot of parents come to visit the center two to three times before their baby is even born.

The transition to day care can be a lot more difficult on a child at one year of age than at 3 months, the time when separation can actually be more difficult on the parent, she said. Parents will leave their children with blankets, stuffed animals, or even T-shirts infused with the scent of a breastfeeding mom, in order to ease separation anxieties. They also call throughout the day and make frequent drop-ins.

Fatigue is another challenge of going back to work while caring for a baby or child at home in the evenings. It helps to spend a few minutes bonding before rushing off to cook dinner. She suggests eating a light snack, spending time playing, and making eye contact.

Parents need to relax about expectations they've had in the past. The food doesn't have to be hot when it comes to the table.

If the situation gets too tough to handle then call an uplifting, supportive friend or relative, or seek help with a family resource service.

Even though breastfeeding provides benefits to mother and baby, it can present a challenge to working moms. Going back to work is often identified as one of the top reasons why women stop breastfeeding. Women working an eight-hour shift can pump their milk during their morning, lunch and afternoon breaks.

Some people use double breast pumps to make the process go faster, but expressing milk is a learned art and it doesn't always go the way people want it to. Challenges can be overcome, so good luck mom and keep on keeping on!!

Do you know a mother who is in the transition period of going back to work and leaving her baby with a care giver? She may need some extra comfort during this time in her life. New mom gifts or spa gift baskets can be a special surpise that may give her the pick-me-up she needs at this difficut time. Be mindful of mom's feelings, be patient and soon both mom and baby will adjust to going back to work!!
