Baby's Amazing First Year

For many, the process of pregnancy and birth is an amazing and exciting time. However, the first months of your baby’s life with all it’s activity and growth will no doubt top that. A baby’s development is incredibly fast and the first year is full of fascinating moments for parents to witness. From the first time they finally let go of the couch and take that first independent step you will be amazed. There are many milestones that take place in between those two moments.

The first of such is baby’s first smile. Many babies begin to smile at around six weeks. Some babies may start earlier or later. All babies are different in this respect so it is wise to consult your general practitioner if you have questions or concerns as he may be able to aleve some of these. A first smile is not only a good sign of baby’s overall contentment but is also linked to good audio, visual and communication skills that baby should be developing in the first few weeks of life. Babies often times find bright colors and vivid patterns amuzing and will respond to such with a smile. Many companies manufacture products designed to offer baby proper stimulation at various stages of development such as the Humpty Dumpty Stripey Doll. This toy features vivid vertical stripes in a variety of colors that are sure to captivate baby’s attention and just might elicit that first smile. This toy also meets the toy safety standards for newborns on up.

At around three months your baby will be expressing himself with a variety of chuckles and gurgles also known as chatting. He will begin to interact more visually and audibly increasing your bonding experience.

Between four to nine months of age baby should begin the teething process. It can take several months of teething before a first tooth appears. This can be a very discomforting time for baby. He may experience a degree of restlessness or irritability. He may have soar gums, flushed cheeks, or the most obvious symptom- a desire to chew, chew and chew. What can a parent do to satisfy baby’s natural urge to chew at this time? The obvious solution would be a teething ring. This provides baby with something not only to bite and chew but also to play with. These can actually assist in helping the teeth to cut through the gums. A Kammi Teether doll offers several features to help control teething discomfort. With four teething knots that can be dampened and placed in the freezer for cooling relief and a soft doll body for cuddling, baby can finally satisfy his urge to chew and bite. This item can also be personalized for keepsake purposes.

At nine months baby is beginning to mobilize. He may begin to scoot or crawl towards toys or objects of interest. Once again, remember all babies develop at different rates. For example, if your baby was premature he will most likely be a little slower at reaching this milestone. Some babies may scoot and shimmy but never crawl. Don’t be alarmed. Some babies skip crawling all together and go straight from scooting to walking. The important thing is that they mobilize by some method before actually walking. Sometimes placing baby on an activity mat such as a Baby Velour Play Mat can stimulate him to scoot or crawl. With colorful smiley faces at each of the four corners to visually stimulate baby is bound to get moving toward one of them.

Finally, the most anticipated of baby’s milestones, walking! Somewhere around thirteen to fifteen months baby will begin to attempt his first steps. This is the moment that moms and dads everywhere dream about. This event is symbolic of baby’s growing independence as he learns to navigate himself freely. At this time it is very important to baby proof your home as a walking baby can encounter dangers around every corner. Good supervision is key. Maintain visual contact with your baby as he walks will not only bolster his confidence but also provide a safe environment to develop his new skill

As stated at the outset, the first months of your new baby’s life are exciting times. Keep track of your baby’s progress, record milestones in a journal, stay in contact with your doctor, and try not to worry excessively about time tables. By following these suggestions, you and your baby are sure to have an amazing first year.
